Descripción

This Half-Standard Reine-Claude Pollinator Duo brings together the varieties Golden Reine-Claude, with round and golden fruits of excellent taste, and Reine-Claude de Bavay, very productive and an excellent pollinator, which produces large yellow-green plums that are very sweet. Planted in the same garden, these two plum trees cross-pollinate each other, ensuring an abundant and tasty harvest from mid-August to mid-September.

This duo consists of:

- x1 'Golden Reine-Claude' : variety introduced long ago in the southwest, easy to grow, renowned for the flavour of its large round plums. The tree can reach a height of 8 m. Its fruits ripen around mid-August, they are round and measure about 4 cm in diameter. They have a thin skin, greenish-yellow, with a golden side where the plum receives the sun. The pale yellow flesh is juicy, sweet and aromatic: it is of excellent taste. A very good pollinating variety, the Golden Reine-Claude is not self-fertile and requires the presence of another plum tree to fruit satisfactorily. It is a bit sensitive to fruit splitting before ripening but without moniliasis, this plum tree is tolerant to Bark-Split Disease and withstands handling and transportation well.

- x1 Reine-Claude de Bavay : a fairly vigorous variety (7 m tall), very productive, with quick and regular fruiting. It produces large round fruits, firm, juicy, sweet and fragrant. Harvest begins around mid-September. This plum tree is self-fertile and disease-resistant. A very good pollinator, it is however sensitive to very harsh climates, as its flowering is quite early, in mid-March.

Individually labelled, in 12/15 Litre pots.

The original area of plum trees is said to be Syria, not China. During the Roman hegemony over the region, various local fruits including plums were introduced to Rome. This fruit tree has a free and spreading habit. Well pruned, it will be easy to harvest. It requires little care and maintenance thanks to the natural openness of its branches. It enjoys full sun or partial shade and grows in any type of rich, moist, deep soil, even heavy, but not calcareous.

Its deciduous leaves are oval, almost oblong, serrated-toothed and slightly pubescent. They fall in autumn. The flowering occurs in March or April depending on the varieties. The tree is then covered entirely with white flowers that appear on the leafless branches of the previous year. They are not self-fertile in most cultivated varieties. It is therefore necessary to plant another plum tree nearby to obtain fruits or more abundant harvests.

Plums are eaten fresh at the foot of the tree, in fruit salads, but also as dessert, in pastries, as accompaniment to meats and dishes. They are made into jams, of course, but also preserved in syrup, compotes... They are also used to make brandy.

half-standard fruit tree is composed of a standard stem attached to a trunk, which only measures between 1.20 and 1.50 m in height. The branches are also slightly lower.

Plantación y cuidados

The Plum Reine Claude thrives in any type of light, rich, neutral or acidic soil, moist but not excessively humid and without limestone. Ensure proper drainage of the planting hole with a thin layer of gravel. Dig a good hole two to three weeks before planting. On the big day, place the tree in a basin of water to moisten the entire root ball. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firmly tamp down the soil around the base. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

During winter, you can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve fruiting.

Cuidado

Consejos de poda Only prune as strictly necessary as plum trees become sensitive to injuries and therefore to diseases. Apply a healing paste to protect them. Plum tree training pruning: it is used to shape the tree's framework. In the first year, during winter but outside the freezing period, prune the tree to obtain 4 to 5 branches oriented outwards. Fruiting pruning: after harvesting plums, and outside the freezing period, remove dead wood and fragile branches. Remove any fruits left on the tree and burn them. Eliminate suckers (shoots at the base of the tree).
