Descripción

This Reine Claude pollinator duo in a goblet shape brings together the excellent varieties Reine Claude d'Althan, semi-late, producing large violet fruits with delicious golden flesh from mid-August, and Reine Claude de Chambourcy, later ripening, with yellow-green plums reaching maturity in September-October. Planted in the same garden, these two plum trees pollinate each other, ensuring an abundant and extended harvest over a period of 7 to 8 weeks.

This duo consists of:

- x1 Ciruelo Reine Claude d'Althan Organic: excellent old variety, vigorous, with abundant production, fairly regular and of good quality. The tree, reaching 6m in height, produces large, slightly flattened round fruits covered with a reddish-purple, even violet skin. Their thick yellow flesh is fine, juicy, and fragrant. The harvest takes place from mid-August to September. This variety, not self-fertile, originates from Hungary and was selected in 1860 by the gardener of Count d'Althan. It will be pollinated by the Reine Claude de Chambourcy.

- x1 Ciruelo Reine Claude de Chambourcy: late variety, vigorous and productive, renowned for its medium-sized, round, slightly pruinose fruits, with golden-green flesh tinged with carmine red. Their green flesh is juicy, sweet, and fragrant. The harvest begins in late September and extends until October. The tree reaches 7m in height. This plum tree is self-fertile, but production is enhanced by cross-pollination. It is an excellent pollinator for other varieties. It is sensitive to cold: its cultivation north of the Loire is not recommended unless in a sunny and wind-protected position.

Individually labelled, in 7.5/10 Litre pots

The original area of plum trees is believed to be Syria, not China. During the Roman hegemony in the region, various local fruits including plums were introduced to Rome. This fruit tree has a free and spreading form. Well pruned, it will be easy to harvest. It requires little care and maintenance thanks to the natural openness of its branches. It thrives in sun or partial shade and grows in any type of rich, moist, deep, even heavy, but non-calcareous soil.

Its deciduous leaves are oval, almost oblong, serrated-toothed, and slightly pubescent. They fall in autumn. Flowering occurs in March or April depending on the varieties. The tree then becomes completely covered with white flowers that appear on leafless branches from the previous year. They are not self-fertile in most cultivated varieties. It is therefore necessary to plant another plum tree nearby to obtain more abundant fruits or harvests.

Plums are consumed fresh under the tree, in fruit salads, as well as in desserts, pastries, as accompaniments to meats and dishes. They are used for making jams, of course, but also in syrup fruits, compotes... They are also used to make brandy.

A goblet-shaped fruit tree has no central leader (vertical main stem), but branches radiating from its trunk. This particular form allows for good penetration of sunlight and air into the canopy, promoting fruit development and ripening, while limiting disease development.

Plantación y cuidados

The Prunier Reine Claude, also known as the Ciruelo, thrives in any type of light, rich, neutral or acidic soil, moist but not excessively wet and without limestone. Ensure proper drainage in the planting hole by adding a layer of gravel. Dig a good hole two to three weeks before planting. On the big day, place the tree in a basin of water to moisten the entire root ball. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Position the tree in the hole, backfill with a mixture of soil and compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firmly tamp down around the base. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

During winter, you can apply a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to enhance fruiting.

Training pruning of the prune tree: it is used to shape the tree's structure. In the first year, in winter but outside the freezing period, prune the tree to obtain 4 to 5 branches pointing outwards. Fruiting pruning: after harvesting plums, and outside the freezing period, remove dead wood and fragile branches. Remove any fruits left on the tree and burn them. Eliminate suckers (shoots at the base of the tree).
