Descripción

The Larix decidua 'Pendula' is the best-known weeping form of the European Larch. This deciduous conifer has a more or less regular shape, with branches that drape down to the ground. In spring, it is covered in short needles of an acid green that are noticeable from afar, then the foliage darkens in summer. Come autumn, this tree resembles a fountain of gold. Winter reveals its graphic architecture and its tawny branches. Use this beautiful selection in Asian-inspired gardens, in cool soil.

The European Larch, Larix decidua, is a large tree that can reach 30 meters in height, belonging to the Pinaceae family, like Firs, Spruces, Cedars, and Pines. It is one of the few conifers, along with the Bald Cypress (Taxodium) and the Metasequoia, whose deciduous foliage falls in autumn. It is native to the mountains of central and southern Europe, where it is found at altitudes between 1400 and 2400 meters. It is a pioneer species capable of improving poor or degraded soils, with great hardiness (down to -40°C). Highly valued for its wood, it adapts very well to lowland cultivation.
The Larix decidua 'Pendula' is often confused with the Larix kaempferi 'Pendula'. The easiest way to differentiate them is by examining the branches. Those of L. decidua are always tawny brown, while those of L. kaempferi are pinkish-purple. This 'Pendula' cultivar, often grafted onto a high trunk, shows fairly rapid growth. Ultimately, depending on growing conditions, it can reach between 6 and 8 meters in height by 3 to 4 meters wide at the base. It adopts a more or less wide or narrow, sometimes asymmetrical, often irregular shape. Its main branches are upright, but the secondary ones are arched and adorned with vertically hanging branches. This branching makes it interesting in winter when the wood is bare. In spring, the branches are covered in bright green needle-like foliage, inserted in small tufts along the branches. The foliage darkens slightly throughout the growing season, finally taking on beautiful yellow hues in autumn. This 'Pendula' form flowers and fruits in the same way as the species.
Extremely cold-resistant, this conifer, however, is sensitive to drought and heat. Perfectly suited to mountainous regions, it will not thrive in much drier southern areas. Requiring almost no maintenance, light pruning will help maintain a beautiful shape.

The Larix decidua 'Pendula' will add character to the garden, even if it is not very large. It naturally fits into a contemporary garden and will stand out in a Japanese-inspired setting. Plant at its base a carpet of Japanese grasses, Ophiopogons, or Liriopes. In a more classic style, pair this weeping larch with traditional, evergreen conifers: arborvitae, common juniper 'Sentinel', Weeping Giant Sequoia...

Plantación y cuidados

The Larix decidua 'Pendula' is a plant from mountain climates, cool to cold, which fears arid situations and heatwaves. It should be planted in spring or from September to November in well-drained soil, but retaining some moisture, even poor, preferably slightly acidic, low in limestone, in a sunny or semi-shady location. A mixture containing coarse sand, heath soil and compost added to the garden soil will be suitable, in a planting pit 50 cm on each side and in depth. Soak the root ball in a bucket of water for fifteen minutes before planting, then water generously once the pit is refilled. If your soil is too heavy, a little trick is to plant your shrub on a mound and mulch it with non-limestone gravel. Water regularly during the first two years, and in case of prolonged drought. This very hardy conifer also fears very clayey soils, heavy, waterlogged.
