Tulipa crispa Brest - Fringed Tulip

The Double Toothed Tulip 'Brest' is a peony-flowered variety with a luxurious and delicate appearance. The very double flowers of this tulip offer a purplish pink colour, edged with a lace of small white crystals, to the point that the flower seems to have been caught by frost. It blooms quite late, in May, on short and strong stems. When cut, its flowers make wonderful bouquets.

The Toothed Tulip 'Brest' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely toothed petal edges. This tulip reaches a height of 40 cm when in bloom. The flowering takes place in May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are double, round and full, measuring up to 6 cm wide. At blooming, the petals shelter some small green flames that then disappear to make way for a delightful palette of purplish pink tones. The intensely fringed edges of this tulip are almost white. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in a vase, extending the tulip season until May.

Toothed tulips are appreciated for their strong stems that give them good support even in hot weather. The 'Brest' tulip is planted in mass, or mixed with other varieties, in large flowerbeds. Combine it with other tulips, earlier ones, white, mauve or dark pink, to maximize the flowering duration of the borders. It can also be used as a border, in rockeries, as well as in pots and planters. This tulip beautifies balconies and terraces very well. It perfectly complements the foreground of large perennials such as peonies, shrubs such as hydrangeas and rhododendrons, as well as small ground cover plants: lungworts, wall bellflowers, aubriete serve as a setting and conceal yellowed leaves in summer.
